Los Angeles Futbol Club Youth Leadership Academy (LAFC) is a groundbreaking youth mentoring community partnership established with the Los Angeles Police Department to serve South Central Los Angeles.
LAFC hosts soccer-themed events and community programs to keep kids off the streets in an area surrounded by five major gang neighborhoods and a crime rate 60% higher than the city average. These events are regularly attended by 100+ youth and supported by major Los Angeles soccer organizations such as LA Galaxy, Chivas USA, UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount University, Cal State University Northridge, UC Riverside, Total Futbol Academy, and more.
In addition, the LAFC internship program trains and mentors at-risk high school students to organize and coach year-round soccer leagues and programs for youth in the neighborhood – providing job skills and creating an ecosystem of leadership and responsibility in the community.
Partners include Bresee Youth Center, U.S. Soccer Foundation, California Community Foundation, LAUSD’s Augustus Hawkins High School, Boys and Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles, St. Michael’s School, and more.
Firebrand co-founded this organization.
